Coping Skills - Good Vs Bad - Manage Your Anxiety
Coping Skills is not something you can buy straight from the store.If that is the case , I will be a regular buyer.
It takes time , patience and lots of practice to get it right.
To be able to do this we need to know the difference between the Good and Bad ways of coping.
Knowing the difference
Good Coping Skills -
A good coping skill is one that helps you feel better in the moment without hurting yourself or someone else. It is also one that does get you in trouble be it with the law or anyone.
Bad Coping Skills -
A bad coping skill is one that you feel good using it but it ended up hurting you or other people. Using a bad coping skill for a long time can be harmful.
Examples Of Good Coping Skills
- Using Positive Self Talk
- Deep Breathing Exercises
- Taking A Shower or Baths
- Going for long walks
- Doing something creative
- Talking to a friend
- Playing a sport or a game
- Hanging out with friends
- Taking a time out
- Practising mindfulness
Examples of Bad Coping Skills
- Name Calling – Insulting
- Becoming violent and aggressive
- Spreading Rumours and Lies
- Yelling And Screaming
- Self Harm
- Threatening Others
- Doing something dangerous
- Substance and Alcohol Abuse
- Pretending like you don’t care
- Blaming other people
- Negative self talk
- Avoidance of family members and friends
Paying More Attention To Yourself
While the list above are just some examples of what you might do when trying to cope , do not stop observing yourself. Always be mindful.
Get a trusted friend or family member to help you out if necessary.
